Dear Editor:
I usually dont speak up like this, but I feel compelled to at this time. My wife and I lived in a much larger community but recently chose to move to Cortez to be closer to our grandchildren and at first thought we would be moving to a sleepy little town, but after reading the newspaper a few times and talking to people at the market, we are finding out there is a much bigger picture here.
What is up with all the over-budget projects, the traffic signal at Seventh Street, the controversial Flaugh-Clark project (what a mistake for a town to make getting into private developing), a mini hydro electric plant (that is going in the red) and the fiber project (where is the benefit?). Hasnt anyone ever heard of a balanced budget?
We as a whole, I believe, have come to accept this from our federal government (notice our $14 trillion debt) and maybe from even larger entities but tiny Cortez? Sounds to me like the heads of departments and/or the town manager have not done their jobs. In this economy we need to be watching every penny we spend. Going over budget $100,000 on a $250,000 project and promoting projects that are not in the best interests of this community is not acceptable. It makes me ponder what these peoples personal budgets look like?
