The First Baptist Church in Mancos will hold revival services at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26, and Saturday, Aug. 27. Brother Don Williams will be the special guest speaker for Sunday services at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28. First Baptist is located at 50 N. Walnut.
Williams has spent the last 30 years as an international missionary with the Southern Baptist International Missionary Board serving in Europe.

Center of Light will present ‘Budrus’ at Conscious Movie Night
The Center of Light will present the film “Budrus” at Conscious Movie Night at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at the Dolores Center of Light, 30705 Road V.6 in Dolores.
The event is free, and all are welcome. All donations will support the Palestine Children’s Fund. “Budrus” follows a Palestinian leader who unites Fatah, Hamas and Israelis in an unarmed movement to save his village from destruction. Success eludes them until his 15-year-old daughter jumps into the fray.

Spirituality discussion group announces new meeting time
Beginning on Friday, Aug. 26, the Spirituality Discussion Group will meet on a new day and time. The group now meets at 3 p.m. each Friday in the conference room at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St.
The group brings people together from many different traditions to openly discuss spirituality from the viewpoint of different belief systems, customs and backgrounds.

Wordstock event will raise funds for local literary events
Wordstock — A Summer Evening of Free Verse — is a fundraiser to help support future literary programs and events full of poetry, prose, songs and stories. Wordstock will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27; the public is invited to come for an evening of potluck and magic. This year’s event will be hosted at the Teetzel’s residence at 24305 County Road U.
The plan is to showcase writers and performers in this area and beyond. All wordsmiths, lyricists, writers, poets and songwriters are invited to perform at Wordstock, although performing is not required; attendees are also welcome to just come and listen. The goal is to keep literary expression alive and well in Montezuma County. The suggested donation for the event is $10 per person; bring a dish to share and whatever you want to drink. This event is open to all ages.

Evangel Assembly will host End of Summer Bash fundraiser
Evangel Assembly will have an End of Summer Bash beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at 209 W. Fifth St., Cortez.
The bash will include three-on-three basketball and volleyball tournaments, as well as food booths, rummage sales and carnival games. The tournaments will begin at 9 a.m. sharp, so plan on arriving early in order to register.

San Juan Bible Camp will hold a yard sale from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 208 N. Dolores Road, Cortez.
The sale will benefit the camper scholarship fund. San Juan Bible Camp gives camper scholarships to help community kids have a summer camp experience.

Baisan will lead trek to observe world of dragonflies at Denny Lake
Discover the world of dragonflies by joining dragonfly enthusiast April Baisan in observing them at local lakes, and learning basic identification techniques with binoculars and/or insect net, and their incredible natural history from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 27.
Some dragonflies can migrate across entire oceans and continents. They can fly forwards at speeds of more than 100 body lengths per second and turn on a dime. They’ve been around for more than 300 million years and were once as large as crows.
Bring binoculars, insect nets, cameras, water and a hat, wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for any weather. There will be some binoculars to borrow.
Meet at Denny Lake at 9 a.m. and be able to caravan to another site or two. Cost is $7 ($5 for Cortez Cultural Center members) to benefit the Hawkins Preserve, and children accompanied by adults are free.

Cultural Center will present speaker on sudden aspen decline
William Anderegg of Stanford University will present “Drought and Forest Die-Off: Causes and Consequences of Sudden Aspen Decline” at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market, Cortez.
Anderegg will discuss ongoing research in the San Juan National Forest into the causes and consequences of a recent and severe trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) forest die-off. The cost is $5 for Cultural Center members and $7 for nonmembers.

Library’s September Storytime theme is ‘I Love to Read!’
“I Love to Read!” is the September theme of Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park Street. Storytime is held every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children and every Saturday at the Farmers Market beginning at 10:30 a.m., weather permitting. The Farmers Market is located on the corner of S. Elm and Main streets. Older children are welcome to join for the craft at 11:15 a.m. Thursdays. The Saturday Storytime will follow the same theme as the preceding Thursday.
On Thursday, Sept. 1 and Saturday, Sept. 3, Storytime will introduce “Who Writes the Berenstein Bears?” “Clifford Who?” will be the focal point for Thursday, Sept. 8 and Saturday, Sept. 10. Next is “Curious George’s Literary Parents” on Sept. 15 and Sept. 17. We’ll explore another author on Sept. 22 and Sept. 24 with “Beatrix Potter’s Animal Friends.” Storytime will wrap up the month with “I Can Write & Draw at the Same Time!: Jack Ezra Keats” on Sept. 29 and Oct. 1.
Storytime offers songs, stories, crafts and silliness and uses the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative program.

Archaeologist will discuss Basketmakers with Hisatsinom
The Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society will present Shanna Diederichs, supervisory archaeologist for Crow Canyon’s Basketmaker Communities Project, to discuss the new Indian Camp Ranch excavation in a talk entitled On Solid Ground: Unpacking the Research of the Basketmaker Community Project at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St.
Diederichs will discuss how, in designing a research plan for the Dillard Basketmaker III site near Cortez, excavation is only one of five very important steps, from research design to curation, which will be executed. The Basketmaker III period is considered to be definitive in the development of Puebloan culture.
Diederichs joined the Crow Canyon staff fairly recently. Previously, she served as project director at several sites including Mesa Verde. Prior to that, she served as field and laboratory supervisor for numerous cultural resource management and mitigation projects in the Four Corners area. She has written for and contributed to numerous resources management planning and reporting publications, including, recently, “Crucible of the Pueblos: The Early Pueblo Period in the Northern Southwest.”

The Montelores Catholic Community will hold a Rummage/Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9 and 10, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, on the corner of Montezuma and Market Streets, in Cortez.
A large array of items will be offered. Donations of items to sell will be accepted at the church hall from Monday, Aug. 29, until noon Thursday, Sept. 8; no large appliances, please.
