THURSDAY, SEPT. 22
Two deputies were pulled over and engaged in contact with a pedestrian on Colorado Highway 145. All emergency lights were activated so they were visible to approaching traffic. A sport utility vehicle approached at a high rate of speed, and passed the two department vehicles. The SUV did not slow down or move over to provide the two deputies a safe area to work in. The deputies left the scene and attempted to catch up with the vehicle, which turned onto a county road in what appeared to be an effort to elude the deputy. The deputy activated his emergency lights and the SUV stopped. The driver admitted that he did not have a valid drivers license, and provided the deputy with an Arizona identification card. The passenger was argumentative about why he was required to exit the SUV and why they needed to search it. Shortly after the second deputy began searching, the driver and passenger were handcuffed. The deputy searching the drivers side located several marijuana pipes as well as a plastic bag hidden under the gear shift molding that was partially in view. The bag contained a glass meth pipe, two smaller bags with a white powdery substance, and a piece of clear plastic with white residue on it. Both suspects claimed to the deputies that the plastic bag belonged to the other man. Various items taken into evidence tested positive for methamphetamine and cocaine.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 24
Dispatch informed a deputy of a male subject walking north along Highway 145. The deputy contacted the male, who was known from prior contacts, hitchhiking on the side of the roadway. The male approached the deputys vehicle on the passenger side and requested a ride to his residence. The deputy agreed to, but if the subject was to enter the vehicle, he would first need to be searched for weapons or illegal contraband. The subject agreed, and nothing was found on his person. The deputy then noticed a metal container on the passenger side of the vehicle; the lid was open and a green leafy substance was visible inside the container. The deputy asked the subject if he would locate his fingerprints on the container; the subject said that he would, and admitted that it belonged to him. The male subject was issued a summons for possession of 38 grams of marijuana.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 25
A deputy asked dispatch to check on a Colorado license plate on a vehicle traveling westbound on Main Street. Both of the registered owners driving privileges came back as revoked/suspended in the state. The vehicle traveled north on Highway 491 at the rate of 52 mph in a 65 mph zone with the deputy behind it, and suddenly made a turn into the parking lot of a closed business. After the deputys vehicle passed by, the car turned around in the parking lot and stopped for about two minutes. The car then was observed turning and continuing north on Highway 491. The car was stopped for suspicious activity and because both registered drivers were revoked/suspended. The female driver said that she didnt have her license on her, and when asked for a name and date of birth, gave a false name and said she was 47 years old. When asked again for her date of birth, she said she had forgotten it. When advised to be honest, she said OK and gave her real name. The drivers license is revoked as a habitual traffic offender. The female was intoxicated and failed voluntary field sobriety tasks. The deputy issued a felony investigation hold, and the female driver was turned over to jail staff and charged with DUI in addition to the driving when license revoked/habitual charges.
A deputy observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in Cortez. The vehicle was clocked traveling at 42 mph in a 25 mph zone, and the deputy followed the vehicle for several blocks in an attempt to catch up with it. After pulling over, the driver was identified as a 19-year-old male who smelled of alcohol. The young male admitted he wasnt supposed to be drinking. When asked how much hed had to drink, he stated four shots of whiskey while at his residence about 5 p.m. The young male performed poorly during sobriety tasks and was transported to the jail, where he was charged for underage drinking and driving, and issued a summons for a mandatory court date.
SATURDAY, OCT. 1
A deputy was dispatched to meet with someone in the sheriffs office lobby in reference to a theft. The man stated that he and his wife had recently moved to the area, and had hired three day laborers to assist them for three days to unload their belongings from a rented moving truck. On the last day, the mans wife paid the workers from an envelope containing approximately $1,700 cash, located in her purse. She then left her purse in the rest room located off the master bedroom. After paying the men, the couple made dinner for them and socialized with them for a couple of hours. During the course of the dinner, one of the men used the rest room located off the master bedroom. On that same evening the woman went into town to purchase a money order and discovered approximately $500 to $1,000 missing from the envelope in her purse. The reporting party told the deputy that the three men were hard workers, that none of them acted suspiciously or gave any indication of ill intentions toward the couple, and that during the three days of employment, no other items were taken. He did not know for sure if one of the men took the money, but that they have no other explanation of where the money may have gone, and since one of the workers had used the rest room where the money was located, they believed it was possible he had taken it. The deputy ran a records check on the worker who had used the rest room, and found that he had been charged with multiple crimes by various law enforcement agencies.
