Cortez residents Bill Volf and Jarvis Dees, and the Pond Kings won the fifth annual Border Wars hockey tournament last weekend in Durango. The Pond Kings finished with a 2-0-1 record.
The first game was against Team Hanson of Albuquerque, N.M. The Pond Kings won 4-1 with Volf getting an assist and the go ahead goal. The next game against the Durango All Stars was a 1-1 tie with Volf getting an assist. On Sunday, the Pond Kings faced Team Lee from Albuquerque and won 5-0 to clinch the tourney championship. Volf had a goal in the game, as he finished the weekend with two goals and two assists. At goalie, Dees had a 0.66 goals against average.
In Durango Adult Hockey League play, the Pond Kings are in first place in their division with two games left before the playoffs start.
