High school student leads birding’s next generation

Martin Cuntz to give bird-watching tour for ages 12 to 17
The movie “The Big Year” inspired Martin Cuntz to take up bird-watching. On May 14, the 15-year-old freshman at Durango High School will lead a birding tour for teens at the Mesa Verde Ute Mountain Birding Festival.
For the past four years, Martin Cuntz, a member of the Durango Bird Club, has volunteered for the bird-banding project at Oxbow Preserve, which seeks to help understand populations and habitats of birds using the nature preserve. On May 14, the 15-year-old Cuntz will lead a birding tour for teens at the Mesa Verde Ute Mountain Birding Festival.

The 13th annual Ute Mountain-Mesa Verde Birding Festival will be held May 10-14. Hosted by the Cortez Cultural Center, the festival attracts regional wildlife specialists who volunteer as tour guides and guest lecturers.
