Dear Editor:
We are writing to urge voters in the Re-1 School District to vote yes on the ballot measure 3-A to replace old and unsafe buildings for Southwest Open School. The revenue will provide a match from the community for a grant from the State of Colorado to enable the SWOS campus to do long-overdue improvements. This is a minimal tax that will yield maximum results.
Students and staff at SWOS learn and work in terribly unsafe conditions of 25 year old pre-fabricated temporary buildings where roofs leak, water runs into electrical sockets, floors are splitting, walls are pulling apart and cracking. There is no single room large enough for the entire school population to gather at one time. Upgrades that essentially will result in a new campus will be a valuable community asset.
Here is a small glimpse of the tax impact on homeowners. On a $100,000 home this tax increase will be $4.68 annually OR an average sub sandwich or hamburger, a potted plant or packet of seeds or a small paintbrush. On a $300,000 home the tax increase per year will be $13.92 OR two sub sandwiches or a large pizza, a flat of tomato starts, or a good hammer. Think about it. Vote yes for Southwest Open School.
