Montezuma Martial Arts karate tournament
Montezuma Martial Arts Studio, located at 18 N. Beech St., will have its first invitational karate tournament today. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and the tournament will start at 10:00 a.m. The event will feature the instructors and student members from Montezuma Martial Arts competing against members from Cortez based Yama Bushi Dojo club members. Contestants ages will range from 6 to adults. All belt ranks, white through black, will be accepted. Competition will be in sparring, kata forms and weapons forms. Trophies are awarded for first, second and third place. There will also be a grand trophy awarded to the best overall competitor. All competitors are required to register in advance or no later than 9 a.m. on the morning of the tournament. People must provide their own protective gear. Admission fees are $10 per event or $20 for all three. Spectator fee is $8 for general admission; children 6-under are free. All active duty military personnel are also free with ID. Community Connection clients will be allowed a 50 percent discount, if accompanied by their mentor. Free intermission demonstrations include Susan Matthew, a Tai Chi expert. Walt Stramel will give a demonstration on fencing/foil techniques, followed by Henry Anchando, who will perform a Japanese sword demonstration. The Dolores Bears Booster Club is placing a holiday order for Dolores Bears Hoodies, T-shirts, fleece vests and jackets. Hoodies and T-shirts are available in black, gray and red. DMR volunteer ski and snowboard instructors
The Adaptive Sports Association in Durango is seeking volunteers to teach skiing and snowboarding to people with disabilities this winter. People can make a difference in students lives, meet great people, and earn discounted lift tickets and Durango Mountain Resort. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must be at least intermediate skiers or snowboarders. Training is free, and volunteers earn discounted skiing at DMR. Internships earning college credit can also be arranged with ASA. Interested volunteers (both new and returning) should attend one of two orientation meetings, which will be held on Thursday, Nov. 3, and Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Durango Recreation Center. Four Corners Rifle & Pistol Junior Shooters season
The 2012 Four Corners Rifle & Pistol Junior Shooters season is ready to begin and is open to all 8-19 years olds wishing to learn firearm safety and marksmanship (rifles are provided). Orientation for new shooters will be Friday, Nov. 4, at 6:30 p.m. at the indoor range, located at 1545 Lebanon Road. The required National Rifle Association Basic Practical Course will be Friday, Nov. 11, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the same location. Weekly practice for returning shooters begins Nov. 11, at 6 p.m., and continues every Friday through spring. The Four Corners Rifle & Pistol Junior Shooters follows the NRA/Winchester Marksmanship Qualification Program, and focuses on the 4-position .22 and air rifle qualifications, which always emphasize safety first. Dolores Ski and Sport Swap
The 11th annual Dolores Ski and Sport Swap will be Saturday, Nov. 12, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dolores Auxiliary High School Gym. Drop off items on Friday, Nov. 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. This will also be your last chance to buy Telluride ski passes. Proceeds go to a scholarship fund for students to participate in the Telluride ski program. For more information, please call 749-2393.
