Archaeologist will present talk
on Cannonball Ruin survey
The Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society is pleased to present Kris Arrington to discuss New Discoveries at Cannonball Pueblo at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St.
In her presentation, Arrington will discuss her 2008-10 survey activities on 276 acres adjacent to the PIII Cannonball Ruin. The surveys revealed the presence of a concentration Puebloan and historic sites proximate to the main ruin site as well as the site of Sylvanus Morleys 1908 field station. Morleys excavations at Cannonball were the first conducted at a major archaeological site in the Northern San Juan Basin. Arrington is a retired BLM archaeologist having spent 25 years working in and around southwest Colorado. She had responsibility for the Alpine Loop National and Historic Byway and the Dolores River Corridor. The last 10 years of her career were spent as the Southwest Regional Archaeologist for the Hazardous Fuels Reduction program dealing with wildfire impact mitigation.

Annual hunter sight-in days in progress, open to the public
The Four Corners Rifle and Pistol Clubs annual Hunter Sight-in days are here. Everyone is welcome to attend and get those guns shooting straight. The sight-in times and dates are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Nov. 3 and 4; and Tuesday, Nov. 15. The sight-in is held at the Outdoor Range east of Cortez on Hwy. 160, across from the race track at the fairgrounds.
The cost is $5 per gun to cover range costs and targets. Junior Shooters Raffle tickets will also be available at the sight-ins. The proceeds from the raffle go to support our area junior shooter programs. 1st Prize: Savage 17 HMR with scope, 2nd Prize: Bushnell 10 x 50 binoculars, 3rd Prize: 6 inch bone handled sheath knife. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. The drawing will be held Dec. 30.

Documentary Gasland explores safety of drilling practice
The award winning documentary Gasland will show at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St.
Follow the filmmaker, John Fox, through 24 states, including Colorado, as he explores the practice of hydraulic fracturing or fracking to find out if this controversial process is actually safe; a story not only about a practice that is both understudied and inadequately regulated, but part of a 34 state drilling campaign, the largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history.

Hospice invites all to pancake supper fundraiser, live auction
Hospice of Montezuma invites the community to an all-you-can-eat pancake supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at the First United Methodist Church, 515 N. Park, Cortez. A live auction will be held from 6 to 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are available at the Hospice office or will be sold at the door for this all-you-can-eat meal of pancakes, bacon, eggs, dessert toppings and beverages. The price of admission is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children, and $15 for families. Proceeds will be used to provide end of life care regardless of ability to pay.

Cortez library has Gobble, Gobble! theme for November Storytime
Gobble, Gobble! is the November theme of Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St. Storytime is held every Friday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Older children are welcome to join us for the craft at 11:15 a.m.

Ralph Dinosaur performance will help raise funds for needy
Ralph Dinosaur will perform Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Cortez Elks Lodge, 2100 N. Dolores Road.
Doors open at 5 p.m. The cover charge for couples is $10 plus one or more sealed canned food, or $12 otherwise; and $5 for singles with one or more sealed canned food, or $7 otherwise. A spaghetti dinner is included in the cover price.
This event is open to the community. Cash and donations will provide food baskets for the needy at Christmas.

The Mancos Public Library will host a poetry workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at 211 W. First St.
The workshop is free and open to the public, and no experience is necessary. Words are free. You can borrow them, arrange them, throw them out, trade them in, color them, etc. Join participants as they play with words and get poem-crazy.

Bridge Emergency Shelter will have volunteer training session
The Bridge Emergency Shelter will have a volunteer training from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the shelter, 601 N. Mildred Road No. 1, around the north side of the Justice Center building off Empire Street.
Important changes have been made to how the shelter is operated this year, and this training will give everyone an opportunity to understand new policies and procedures. Training will cover verbal de-escalation strategies, crisis intervention, and client advocacy.

San Juan Mountain Association will host K-9 search, rescue presentation
The San Juan Mountains Association will host a presentation by the K-9 Search and Rescue Team from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the San Juan Public Lands Office in Dolores.
Headed by Team Commander Chuck Melvin, this canine SAR unit is a nonprofit, 100 percent volunteer organization. The K-9 SAR Team, based in Dolores, is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to assist local, state, and federal agencies in the search for missing people. The team will share their knowledge about canine search theory and practice, training, types of dogs most successful in the field, and much more.
Members and friends are invited to join. SJMA will provide light snacks.

Archaeological research and report writing class will be offered
The fall class sponsored by the Program for Avocational Archaeological Certification (or PAAC) will be Research Design and Report Writing. The class will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, and from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Anasazi Heritage Center, 27501 Colorado Highway 184 near Dolores. The cost is $12.
The course is taught by Kevin Black, assistant state archaeologist, and will focus on the process for designing a research project in archaeology, as well as how to go about writing the report at the conclusion.

The Living Tarot Oracle provides sacred interactive theater event
The Living Tarot Oracle, a sacred interactive theatrical event, returns for a second year. There will be two shows: 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, and 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Mancos Opera House.
This unique, interactive theatrical event utilizes the ancient divination tool of the Tarot Cards with live Oracles. This event will include a living representation of each of the 22 major arcana cards of the Tarot Deck. Each of these Living Oracles will have an individual station in the Opera House and will be in full costume and character of that particular card. Six Tarot card readers will assist each participant in framing a particular question they may have. Once the participants have pulled their one to three cards in relation to their question, they will be directed to the individual Living Oracles, reflecting the cards they drew. The cost is $10 for a one-card reading, $5 for each additional card. Readings will be limited to three cards for each individual question.

Presbyterian Women will hold fall bazaar with lunch, quilt drawing
The Presbyterian Women will hold their fall bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Fellowship Hall of the Montezuma Valley Presbyterian Church, 350 S. Washington, Cortez.
There will be homemade gifts, lots of baked goodies, jams, jellies, pickles, plants, candy and more. A drawing for the quilt made by the women will be held around 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be available of your choice of soups, bread, pie, and a drink for $5 for adults, $3.50 for children. Cortez Public Library will screen Colors of the Mountain film
The Independent Film Series at the Cortez Public Library will be showing The Colors of the Mountain at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 202 N. Park St.
The summary of this Columbian film, directed by San Sebastian, is: Young Manuel lives with his hard-working farmer parents in the remote, mountainous region in the Colombian countryside. While the adults in their lives try to avoid both the armed military and the guerrilla rebels fighting each other in the area, Manuel and his friend Julian are obsessed with playing soccer any chance they get. Shortly after his birthday, the new ball Manuel received as a gift gets kicked off to a minefield, and he, Julian and their albino friend Poca Luz will do everything in their power to recover their prized belonging an essential part of their everyday lives and dreams.

Kemper Elementary students will present Veterans Day program
The Kemper Elementary School third-, fourth- and fifth-grades will be presenting a Veterans Day program on Thursday, Nov. 10. The program will be presented twice once at 1:30 p.m. and again at 2:45 p.m. at Kemper in the gymnasium. Attendees should enter via the southeast entrance of the building, which is parallel to Montezuma Avenue. Parking is limited to that which is available on Montezuma Avenue and the parking lot adjacent to the Church of Christ across the street.
This program is open to the entire Cortez community.
