The Skanska Rocky Mountain District sponsored the Montezuma-Cortez School District’s Adopt-a-Teacher project. Employees contributed $802 worth of supplies to help two classes of Navajo language and culture students at Cortez Middle School and Montezuma-Cortez High School. Employees provided school supplies, including colored pencils, Post-It notes, construction paper, erasers, scissors, staplers, staples, a paper cutter, a money kit, plastic foods, fruits and vegetables, and a globe. “Schools across the country have faced budget cuts because of the current economic problems,” Betty Ray, the teacher of the Navajo language and culture classes, said in a written statement about the donation. “Skanska provided me with classroom supplies, which is a great reflection on our community program of adoption of teachers by local businesses that are willing to help teachers and our schools during these difficult times.” Skanska Communication Coordinator Kim Hammond, who organized the drive and arranged the delivery of the supplies to Betty Ray, said “The turnout of our employees for the Adopt-a-Teacher project was excellent, and Betty’s response to what she called ‘Christmas’ made it all worthwhile.” Pictured, from left, are Kim Hammond, Skanska Communications coordinator; Betty Ray, teacher; and Judy Shuenemeyer, community program coordinator.
