The retired high school building’s demolition has also faced obstacles in the form of theft.
The building has been the target of three separate burglaries so far this month. Almost $5,000 worth of tools were reported stolen from the gym on June 2, and about $2,000 worth of copper pipe was cut out and stolen on June 8.
After the second burglary, Cortez police installed a game camera near the north entrance, but on June 12, school maintenance supervisor Raymond Lopez reported someone had broken into the building again. This time, responding police officers said the doors appeared to have been tampered with from the inside. Nothing of value was stolen on June 12, but police said it appeared someone had tried to remove several more copper pipes.
As of June 15, police had not named a suspect in the crimes.
