This year, 320 teachers submitted over 4,100 visual and literary works to the Colorado Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. More than 4,100 Colorado students were inspired to enter their artwork in this prestigious national competition, which has been an annual event since 1923. In the visual arts, 500 students received recognition;140 Gold Keys were awarded, 170 Silver Keys and 190 Honorable Mentions. The work, on display in Denver, brings outstanding visual arts to a national audience by highlighting outstanding student work and encouraging creative development.
This year, two students from M-CHS were recognized for their outstanding work. Stephen Garner received a Silver Key for his watercolor titled Awakenings. Sara Lewis earned an Honorable Mention for her mixed media work Over the Shoulder Boulder Holder which used a roadside sign as inspiration. M-CHS Art teacher, Deb Harriman is extremely proud of her students. Only two other students from all schools on the Western Slope received Key Awards.
To see this work and much more, mark your calendars for the weeks of March 616. The M-CHS Art Dept. will be displaying at the Cortez Cultural Center in celebration of Youth Art Month, a month-long celebration across the country which celebrates art in the public schools. The opening will be Thursday, March 8 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., hosted by the M-CHS National Art Honor Society and funded by The Cortez Gifted and Talented Committee.
