Dove Creek sophomore Cori Guynes won in style last Saturday in track and field action.
In just the second meet of the season, the Lady Bulldog sprinted and jumped her way to a 100-meter hurdles title at the Delta Panther Invitational. Guynes won in 17.06, edging Dolores rival Cydney McHenry, who clocked in at 17.35 for second place.
The two raced again in the 300-hurdles. This time, McHenry had the better time at 52.08, coming in third. Guynes was fourth in 53.37. Dolores Brianna Schwartz placed fifth in a finish of 54.47.
Dove Creeks Shelbie Knuckles recorded a fifth-place time of 18.09 in the 100-hurdles.
Dolores star Lexi Atkinson made her season debut in the 100-meter dash. She came in third in 13.51 and also placed ninth in the long jump at 14.07.
In the triple jump, Lady Bears Cassie Lard and Mindy McCracken leaped to fifth- and-eighth-place distances of 31-00 and 29-01.
Michelle Kline sprinted to a fifth-place time of 1:07.27 in the 400.
Other strong performances from the Lady Bulldogs came from Madison Young, who heaved the shot put 29-02 to come in 10th. Knuckles was 10th in the triple jump at 28-11.
Cole Baughman led the Bulldogs in the 110- and 300-hurdles with times of 19.06 (10th) and 48.91 (17th).
Moki Youngquist took fourth in the 110-hurdles at 17.46 to lead the Dolores Bears. Teammate Stephen OConnor-Seville ran to a seventh-place time of 2:13.48 in the 800.
Dolores and Dove Creek will compete Friday in Cortez at Panther Stadium at noon in the Panther Invitational. The event is on the campus of Cortez Middle School.
