Tipton gets GOP nod

DENVER — It’s game on in the 3rd Congressional District.
U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Cortez, secured his party’s nomination to run for re-election Friday at the district assembly in Denver. His opponent, state Rep. Sal Pace, got the Democratic Party’s nomination the same day in his hometown of Pueblo.
The two candidates agree on which issues will define the campaign – the economy, energy and Medicare.
“It’s going to be about jobs. It’s going to be about the economy, getting our people back to work,” Tipton said in an interview Saturday.
It cost him $97 to fill his Ford F-150’s gas tank last week, Tipton said, calling on President Barack Obama to approve the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada.
Tipton criticized Democrats for cutting money out of the Medicare budget in the 2010 health-insurance law. But Pace hit Tipton for votes to “cut Medicare in order to provide a tax cut for multimillionaires.”
Pace also played up biographical differences, saying he worked his way through Fort Lewis College as a dishwasher and waiter.
“I have much different life experiences than the current congressman,” Pace said in a phone interview.
As for the GOP presidential primary, Tipton has not endorsed frontrunner Mitt Romney.
“I’m going to support the Republican candidate,” Tipton said. “I’m not taking a stand in this race. I’ve got my own to run.”
