Ashley Lingo continues to excel throwing the discus for the Lady Panthers track and field team.
Lingo, ranked No. 4 in 4A and No. 1 on the Western Slope, recorded first-place tosses of 117-9 and 121-6 last Friday and Saturday in Grand Junction and Rifle.
Montezuma-Cortez High School competed at the 11-team Phil Wertman Invitational, hosted by Fruita Monument, and was at the 19-school Rifle Invitational the next day.
The Lady Panthers throwers had a great week overall. Laura Heaton won the shot put in Grand Junction, heaving it 36-8.50. Randy Elliot had third- and-second-place discus throws of 106-6 and 113-25 Friday and Saturday. The M-CHS girls were fourth- and-10th-place as a team at each meet.
Other strong Lady PanthersÂ’ performances Friday came from Jordan Miller and Arrela Jorgensen. Each took third and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles at 18.66 and 18.81. Katelyn Muzzy took third (51.05) and sixth (52.30) in the 300-hurdles both days. Amanda Gallegos took fifth in the 800-meter dash (2:30.29) and sixth in the 400 (1:03.35) each meet. Imari Black sprinted to a time of 13.37 (third and seventh) at both meets.
For the Panthers, Nick Haukeness came in third- and-sixth-place in the 300-hurdles at 44.72 and 45.03 over two days. Baseball players Stephen Candelaria and Soren Jorgensen put down the mitts Saturday to throw the discus and shot put. Candelaria came in sixth at 113-2, while Jorgensen was third at 42-9.50.
As a team, the boys placed eighth Friday and 12th Saturday.
Grand Junction won the Phil Wertman Invitational on the girls side, while host Fruita took the boys championship.
Battle Mountain (Vail) was the girls champion in Rifle. The host school won the boys team title.
M-CHS will travel to the Montrose Invitational on Saturday.
