“Pirates of the Dolores River” was the theme this year, and people came wearing creative costumes complete with swords, bandanas, eye patches, long-beards, pirate hats, and flowing dresses and sashes.
Dr. Allan Burnside and his wife Linda were honored as Dolores Citizens of the Year, and GST Liquor was awarded the Dolores Business of the Year.
The Burnsides run a popular medical clinic in Dolores and donate a lot to the community.
“Shiver me timbers,” said pirate Dr. Burnside upon receiving the award. “We’ve been in business here for 22 years. It’s a wonderful community and we’re very happy to be part of it.”
The Burnsides are well known for their generous spirit, added announcer Scott Cooper, superintendent of Dolores Schools.
The Burnsides hosts a kids Bike Rodeo every Escalante Days and give away dozens of bikes to local children. Every year, the couple provides student athletes free physicals, saving each student $35.
And as a licensed raffle official and Dolores Rotary leader, Dr. Burnside hosts regular raffles and monthly Bingo games at the Dolores Community Center. The money raised helps pay for the Dolores Christmas decorations, scholarships for kids, the Teen Maze, The Galloping Goose, clean water in other countries, plus more.
“We honor you and all that you do, thank you,” Cooper said.
Business of the YearGST Liquor manager Linda Johnson accepted the award for Business of the Year.
Owner Grant Smith built the brand new store two years ago on 11th Street in Dolores. It’s impressive storefront and diverse stock of beer, wine, and spirits is popular with locals and draws in tourists and travelers along Highway 145.
“We’ve been open for two years, and it has been the most fun job I’ve had in my entire life,” Johnson said. “I’m so proud of my dedicated crew. It’s working out great, and we love all of our customers. Thank you all for your support.”
