U.S. department likely to rescind plan for region’s oil and gas

Pending BLM master leasing plan in Southwest Colorado could evaporate
Riders climb a hill at Phil’s World, which is included in the 71,000-acre BLM master leasing plan for oil and gas development.
The master lease plan proposal includes the Mesa Verde escarpment, where no surface drilling is allowed.
The previously approved area for a master leasing plan in Montezuma and La Plata counties would be about 71,000 acres, about a fifth the size of the original proposal of 326,000 acres. A new directive from the Department of Interior states that MLPs burden oil and gas development and therefore should be eliminated.
The Southwest Resource Advisory Council debates in 2016 on whether the area needs a BLM master leasing plan to further regulate oil and gas development.
