TUESDAY, JULY 10
A deputy on patrol on a county road observed an unoccupied pickup truck parked in the eastbound lane of travel. Dispatch ran the tags, which came back as registered to a car in Durango, and advised that the plates had not been reported as stolen. The deputy took possession of the plates and ran the VIN for the truck to identify the pickup trucks owner. The truck was towed due to being a traffic hazard and displaying fictitious plates. A summons and complaint was issued to the registered owner of the truck for driving with fictitious plates. The deputy left a message at the phone number for the trucks owner to contact him.
A deputy patrolling on Hwy. 160 observed a sedan traveling south at a speed well below the posted speed limit of 65 mph. The sedan bearing New Mexico plates turned onto a county road and traveled at a speed of approximately 18 to 20 mph in a 35 mph zone. The deputy observed the car turn into the driveway of a residence and turn off its lights; the car sat there for approximately two minutes with the occupants of the car making no move to exit. There were no lights on in the house. Due to the increase in the number of burglaries in the county, the car having out of state plates, and the fact that no one was making a move to exit the vehicle, the deputy contacted the car. As he approached the car, he observed a male subject walking back to the car that had three other occupants sitting inside. When the deputy asked him what he was doing, the subject stated that he was looking for his friend, David. The deputy immediately noticed the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside the car. A male inside the residence opened the front door and asked what was going on. The male subject from the car said he was looking for his friend, Matt, to which the house resident stated there was nobody there by that name. When the deputy asked the subject for his ID and car paperwork, he began to go through the glove compartment and his wallet in no apparent hurry. The subject denied drinking alcohol when asked and stated that he does not drink, but admitted to smoking marijuana around an hour ago. The subject failed to perform voluntary roadside maneuvers satisfactorily. He was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and for driving without a valid drivers license, and was escorted to jail. The registered owner of the vehicle was notified to come pick up the car.
THURSDAY, JULY 12
A deputy responded to the landfill for a report of theft. The manager of the landfill stated that two male subjects had come onto the property and had taken an unknown amount of copper wire. They made two separate trips to their vehicle which was parked outside the main gate, which was described as a two-tone early to mid 90s Chevy or GMC extended cab pick up truck, with a topper on the bed. When the male subject crossed the main gate, they brought with them a garden-type utility cart, and a residential dumpster from near the main shop was also used. The subjects had a medium-sized dog with them. The deputy collected various types of evidence at the scene and also notified two salvage businesses in the area.
A deputy on patrol on Hwy. 160 observed a pickup truck traveling south suddenly pull off the highway. The deputy approached the truck to do a welfare check and noticed a female standing next to the open drivers side door; there were fiver other occupants in the truck. The deputy asked if she had been driving and if everything was okay. She stated she had not been driving and was okay. The deputy requested additional cover due to the six occupants of the vehicle and noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from inside the truck. The occupants were identified and included four women and two men. The woman identified standing by the drivers side door was found to have an outstanding warrant, and she was placed under arrest. There were several open containers inside the vehicle and marijuana and drug paraphernalia was found. One of the women admitted ownership and was issued a summons. The vehicle was left on scene and the remaining occupants requested a cab be notified to pick them up.
