On Tuesday evening, many in Montezuma County and even folks up in Rico reported a torrential downpour. As much as two inches fell in places, and mud and rocks were washed down onto Highway 145 near Rico. The water is always welcome, but many said they hadnt seen it come down that hard in ages. Surprisingly, however, is that the downpour seemed to skip the Town of Dolores that night. As I drove around the county Tuesday night after the rains hit, the biggest celebrants of the downpour seemed to be frogs and toads. As I drove, there seemed to be hundreds of the little creatures hopping about, across roads, up driveways and across lawns.

The J.D. and Alice Rose 68th wedding anniversary celebration was a huge success. It was held at the Ponderosa over the weekend and some 80 or so people attended. J.D. said he had seven of his sisters and one brother attend the celebration. J.D. was 19 when they married and Alice was 17. Sixty-eight years is definitely something to celebrate. Congratulations.

The rains seemed to be good for the river. As expected, about 12 hours after the rain hit the high mountains, the river in Dolores rose Wednesday and got murky and turned a reddish color. You can always tell when it rains heavy around Priest Gulch because the river turns a slight shade of red, just like the dirt in that area.

Lets see if all this rain will be good for the mushroom crop. It was late summer in 2010 when the San Juans had a beautiful mushroom crop. It was too dry for one last year, and for the most part, is too dry every year. It rained a lot in the late summer of 2010.

The Dolores Fire Department was working hard this week making landscaping look great near the fire station. Beautiful rock was added at the base of some trees planted there a few years back. It looks nice.

Speaking of landscaping. The famous black goat was seen near town off the hill and near the new landscaping at the Fire Department this week, munching on some of the green grass near the water dock. Lets hope the goat doesnt munch on any of the firefighters hard work.

For those of you that cant wait to get a jump start on the year ahead, I am told that school supply lists for Dolores are already available at Wal-Mart in Cortez. I am in denial however that the school year is fast approaching and will likely wait until the last minute to purchase such things.

Teachers are expected to cheer on the races of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge near the high school parking lot. Dolores Schools Superintendent Scott Cooper said that while school will not be in session, teachers will be working and he has arranged a staff barbecue in the parking lot, so teachers can eat, have a good time and cheer on the racers as they make their way up to Telluride.
