With an occasional squeal of a pig and other barnyard sounds — and of course smells — the annual Montezuma County Fair Junior Livestock auction wrapped up on Saturday.
The auction recognized youngsters for their hard work over the past year raising beef, swine, sheep, goats, poultry and rabbits.
With more than 90 kids participating in the show, a total of $144,325 was made from the auction. The money raised goes to the 4-H youth that raised beef, sheep, goats, swine, rabbits and poultry.
The total number of animals was 94, which was down a little from the 2011 fair, which had 121. But the total amount raised was up from $127,300 in 2011.
A total of 14 grand champion and reserve grand champion animals were sold at the junior livestock auction.
Madison Lambert's grand champion swine brought in $3,900, bought by Keesee Motors.
Southwest Memorial Hospital paid $3,600 for the grand champion beef, raised by Maniesha Buck.
Other big winners were Chance Lambert's reserve grand champion swine, earning $3,300 and Ryan Daves, earning $3,600 for his reserve champion bred and fed beef. Jaycee Gallaher earned $3,000 for her reserve grand champion beef.
Dallin Lanier and Riley Oliver also earned big money for their beef, selling their animals for $3,900 and $3,800 respectively.
Brenna Leonard earned $3,000 for her swine.
In total, there were 13 beef, 28 swine, 24 goats, 21 sheep and a variety of poultry and rabbits at this year's fair.
A few of the 4-H youth will be taking their animals to the Colorado State Fair, so they did not put them up for auction Saturday.
