Alpaca 4-H
Learn about alpacas without having to own one. Alpaca 4-H meets two Sundays a month; our program introduces 4-H members, ages 8 to 18, to the care, training and maintenance of alpacas. Hospice of Montezuma offers several free community bereavement support groups at their location of 1345 S. Broadway, Cortez. The last Tuesday of every month from 5:15 to 6 p.m. the group meets to discuss any loss issue. A group for individuals mourning the loss of their pet meets from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. A local attorney conducts a free legal services clinic on an ongoing basis to answer general questions about the law and court procedures. This service is available at no charge on Thursday evenings between 5 and 6 p.m. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 110 W. North St. in Cortez. These meetings will be for informational purposes only, and not to establish an attorney-client agreement. Questions may be about a variety of subjects such as small claims, divorce and child support, as well as wills and probate. The Montelores (Montezuma-Dolores) School and Public Employees Retirement Association meets five times a year, twice in spring and twice in autumn, with a February social event. The Southwest Center for Independent Living holds a brain injury group on the last Tuesday of every month at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Southwest Intertribal Voice
Southwest Intertribal Voice meets at 6 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month, at 3900 South Hwy. 160, just south of Road D. Our meetings are held jointly with the Montelores Human Relations Coalition. Sweats in the Sweat Lodge are at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. We are a non-profit and incorporated group. Our mission is to increase awareness of traditional cultural values of all native Americans. At present, we are building a Ceremonial Hogan on our land on the site of the former All Nations Medicine Lodge. The Southwest Singers rehearse at 6:30 p.m. every Monday in the choir room of the First United Methodist Church, 515 N. Park, Cortez. All who enjoy singing and music are encouraged to attend. Spirituality Discussion Group
The Spirituality Discussion Group meets at 3 p.m. each Friday in the conference room at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park Street. Organizers hope to promote the unity of humankind and world peace through spiritual growth. They would like to get people together from many different traditions to explore the idea that we are all interconnected, and to openly discuss spirituality from the viewpoint of different belief systems, customs, and backgrounds. Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS)
TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) meets every Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the Cortez Public Library conference room, 202 N. Park St. TOPS is an organization to help and encourage those who are trying to lose weight. Everyone is invited. The meetings involve a weigh-in and program encouraging weight loss. United Search and Rescue
United Search and Rescue has its monthly business meetings every fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Montezuma County Sheriffs Office, 730 E. Driscoll St., Cortez, and training meetings on the second Monday of each month at various locations. Veterans Assistance Group
An unofficial Veterans Assistance Group meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at 24993 County Road S, north of Cortez (the corner of Lebanon Road and County Road S). Find help with disability claims, applications for education benefits, contacting Veterans Assistance Association, medical benefits, and appeals, or just get help dealing with the system.
