The cars lined up around the block Thursday morning as parents dropped their children off for the first day of school. It seemed busier Thursday, possibly because there are more students expected to attend Dolores schools than ever before. But after the pictures were snapped and hugs were given, teachers and students got down to business.
At the high school and middle school level, there was a pep rally to get students geared up for that ultimate goal: graduation.
In addition to welcoming new and old student faces, there ware also 17 new teachers at the district. Wow.
It is going to be a great year.

On Thursday, I took both my children to Durango for a bit of school shopping and a trip to their pediatrician. Among other stops, we stopped at the Durango Discovery Museum to let the kids explore. My daughter talked me into climbing up to the top of the building with her and we stared out the window, just in time to see the Galloping Goose No. 5 cruise by.
I had forgot it was the Durango Railfest and was amazed that our timing was perfect as we got to see Dolores pride and joy round a curve in downtown Durango from three flights up.
It was neat to see and I did see the Goose waddle a bit when it went around the curve...maybe that is exactly where it got its name.

Speaking of pleasant surprises. I always forget that the Pinto Bean Classic has a nice fireworks display as part of the tournament and the whole family was delighted to watch some of the show on Saturday.

I am told that the benefit for Steve Springer went very well on Saturday. Springer is now confined to a wheelchair after a motorcycle accident this spring and his medical bills are insurmountable. Attendees walked away with magnets that warned drivers to share the road with motorcycles.

Little ones that attend Teddy Bear Preschool have to wait until Monday, Aug. 27, for their first day of school, much to the disappointment of my daughter. But there will be some new faces and a new addition to the building there to greet her on Monday, well worth the wait.

Who needs to go all the way to Palisade for peaches? There are delicious peaches in McElmo Canyon. I spent Sunday picking peaches on Jude and Addies farm. You may know them from Let It Grow Nursery in Cortez. The peaches may be past their peak, they were so ripe on Sunday, I made the kids stand over a sink to eat them, but call Let It Grow and ask.
