Theres more to the Unlimited Learning Center than meets the eye.
The center, located at 640 E. 2nd St. in Cortez, offers more than just GED preparation and testing.
College and other adult courses, and reading, math and English literacy skills are also offered.
Readers may be surprised that the Unlimited Learning Center offers associates, bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees through online and video conferencing courses. Most of the centers courses come from Utah State Universitys College of Eastern Utah, but courses can also be taken through other schools. Some 70 courses will be offered this fall.
The center also will have its first masters degree graduate soon.
Sheldonna Zwicker of McElmo Canyon is on schedule to complete a masters degree in agricultural economics. All she has left is a thesis, said Ann Miller, the Centers adult education director.
The Center has been utilizing video conferencing since 2007, thanks to a Rural Utilities Services equipment grant from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.
We can receive and broadcast classes, Miller said.
Elective courses are broadcast to Chupik high school students in Alaska. A number of other school districts in Alaska are also interested, Miller said.
The Center recently received 25 laptop computers from a state library Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) grant. These will be used for computer literacy classes.
