Playing on the road against Bayfield on Feb. 20 in the play-in game of the Class 3A Intermountain League District Tournament, the Montezuma-Cortez High School girls basketball lost, 47-44.
The loss dropped the Lady Panthers’ overall record to 4-16 overall, and although the team is highly unlikely to earn a spot in the Class 3A State Tournament, the year was one of marked improvement for a team that finished 1-19 overall last season.
High scorers for the Lady Panthers included sophomore Dimery Plewe and junior Ayanna Silas, who scored 8 points each.
Junior Kailey Case and sophomore Presley Frost each scored seven points for M-CHS.
Bayfield was led in scoring by junior Jordan Lanning, who scored 11 points, and freshman Macee Schultz, who chipped in 10.
With its victory, Bayfield will advance to a district semifinals matchup against top seeded Centauri High School, which will take place at Alamosa High School on Friday, Feb. 23.
