On Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Amrit Yoga Fall series of classes began at The United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, Grand and Oak Streets in Mancos.
Students bring a mat, a meditation cushion and a blanket and plan to arrive 5 to 10 minutes before 11 a.m. for the rejuvenating sessions.
The classes will be a series of 8 weeks ending on Oct. 30. The drop-in cost is $10 with a sliding scale for need. There is a discount for the purchase of 8 classes in advance as well.
Amrit Yoga is called The Posture of Consciousness by the founder Yogi Amrit Desai. Remaining aware of the bodymind and the sensations both during the postures, and during interactions in life are the hallmarks of Amrit Yoga.
The class is appropriate for all levels from beginners to advanced as the focus is upon beginning where you are, as Yogi Desai says, you cannot begin where you are not. Ahisma or non-violence towards all beings including oneself is emphasized.
There is no competition, not with anyone else, or with your idealized picture of yourself. There are two parts to each asana or posture: the active deliberate part, and the receiving, relaxing part.
The classes are taught by Mimi Pribble Scott who is certified by The Amrit Institute, Yoga Alliance approved program, with 500 hours of teacher training in the postures, pranayama (breath work), meditation, yogic philosophy, teaching methodology, anatomy, and physiology.
