With the youth wrestling season in full swing, youth wrestlers representing the Dolores Wrestling Club competed throughout the state last weekend and enjoyed quality results.
Those wrestling locally included Ryatt Loomis, Kyle Black, Daniel Jacket, Nico Martinez, Brooks Story, Marshal Wickstrom, Jacob Stepp and River Wickstrom, who all earned first-place finishes in their respective divisions at the Cortez Tournament on March 24.
Finishing second in their divisions at the Cortez Tournament were Jordan Yazzie, True Loomis, Jonah Ritter, Payson Bryan and Amadeo Martinez. Noah Hobbs, Zaine Johnson Ward, Daniel Philpott, Hunter Ferguson, Madisyn Schuster and Willy Millard each earned third-place finishes.
While the majority of the Dolores Wrestling Club’s members stayed close to home, a group of 10 club members traveled to the RMN Super State Tournament and the Middle School Regionals Tournament at Adams State University on March 24.
Three middle school wrestlers who attended the tournament – Ethen Robson, Carter Galloway and Braden Schmittel – qualified for state, while five elementary school competitors – JJ Robson, Teagus Samora, Jaiden Green, Bodie Steigelmeyer and Degan Lake – placed.
Noah Hobbs placed third as a Division 1 wrestler at the tournament, and Daniel Jacket placed first as a Division 2 wrestler.
Next up for the Dolores Wrestling Club will be a trip to the State Wrestling Tournament in Denver on March 30-31. Wrestlers who did not qualify for state will compete at the Judy Mason Memorial Tournament at Kirtland High School on March 31.
