Wednesday, March 21
6:20 p.m.: A woman was arrested in the 1300 block of East Main Street on five warrants from San Juan County, New Mexico, and Montezuma County, and on suspicion of possessing drug paraphernalia and a controlled substance after the vehicle in which she was riding was pulled over for making a right turn from the wrong lane. She was reportedly hiding in the backseat. A K9 alerted police to possible illegal substances, and a officers began to search the car, and the woman appeared to suffer from anxiety. A syringe, two glass pipes and a digital scale containing meth residue were found in some bags in the backseat of the car, which the driver said belonged to the suspect. She was cleared at Southwest Memorial Hospital before being taken to jail, due to her anxiety.
Thursday, March 22
12:27 a.m.: Police responded to a report of harassment at the Cozy Inn Motel, 440 S. Broadway. A woman said she fell backward during an argument with her boyfriend, and that he had let her fall and hit her head. Later, she said he had pushed her. The boyfriend reportedly had a bite mark on his shoulder which he said was from the woman, but unrelated to their argument they had. Responding officers transported the woman to Southwest Memorial Hospital to have the bump on her head treated, but did not make any arrests due to a lack of probable cause.
1:40 p.m.: Police responded to a report of theft at Mesa Verde Inn, 640 S. Broadway. A manager reported $85 to $90 went missing from the petty cash drawer before 9 a.m., along with some candy and snacks. She reportedly said several employees had been let go in the past week, and she later learned they all had keys to the drawer. The case remains under investigation.
6:23 p.m.: A man was arrested in the 1400 block of East Main Street on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance after police responded to a report that someone matching his description tried to kidnap a child. A teen girl claimed a man in a black Cadillac tried to persuade her to get into the car with him near Montezuma-Cortez High School. Officers pulled over a Cadillac a short time later and searched the car and driver with his permission. A package of two small bags of meth and a bag of heroin was found in his pocket. His vehicle also reportedly contained three unused glass pipes and several straws with meth residue. The man denied he enticed the child, and said he was in Cortez only to buy pipes for smoking meth.
10:43 p.m.: A man was arrested in the parking lot of Burger King, 520 W. Main St., on a Dallas County, Texas, felony warrant after he was pulled over for driving without headlights.
Friday, March 23
12:40 a.m.: A man was arrested in the 400 block of West Second Street on suspicion of tampering with physical evidence, driving under restraint, driving with obstructed vision and resisting arrest after he was pulled over for driving a vehicle with several large cracks on the front windshield. While officers were speaking to him, the man reportedly acted nervous and reached for his pants pocket while stepping away from the officers. They then tried to handcuff him, but he reportedly resisted, and the officers tackled him to the ground, as the struggle continued. One officer reportedly took out his stun gun and pressed it against the man’s back, but he stopped struggling and put his hands behind his back before the officer could stun him. After the struggle, the man reportedly spat out a chewed-up plastic bag, which he later said had contained meth. A pocket knife was found in his pocket. He was cleared at Southwest Memorial Hospital due to the meth consumption and cuts and bruises to his face sustained during the struggle.
2:46 a.m.: Police assisted deputies in a stolen vehicle investigation at the Bridge Emergency Shelter, 601 N. Mildred Road. Officers questioned a man about the car, but he would only say that his sister had offered him a ride, and he didn’t know it was stolen.
12:49 p.m.: A man was arrested at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., on suspicion of violating a protection order after library staff reported he was intoxicated and refused to leave. He was cleared at Southwest Memorial Hospital due to intoxication.
2:59 p.m.: A female inmate was served with a felony warrant at Montezuma County Detention Center, 730 E. Driscoll St.
4:52 p.m.: A man was arrested on a felony warrant in the 200 block of South Park Street.
7:30 p.m.: A man was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting at Walmart, 1835 E. Main St., after employees reported he and a woman had stolen $201.90 worth of food and left. Police later pulled the woman’s vehicle over and served her with a trespass notice.
Saturday, March 24
11:14 a.m.: A man was cited on suspicion of driving under restraint and speeding in the 300 block of East Main Street. When he was pulled over, the man reportedly put his hands outside his vehicle and told police he had a rifle in the backseat that he was about to pawn. Officers handcuffed him, but he appeared to be shaking, and said he was bipolar and off his medication. The officers took him to Southwest Memorial Hospital for a clearance, and Axis Mental Health staff there recommended he be transported to a treatment unit in Durango. The officers drove him there and issued him a summons instead of arresting him. The rifle was left in the possession of the man’s friend, at his request.
8:08 p.m.: A woman was arrested in the 500 block of South Cedar Street on a felony warrant.
8:19 p.m.: A woman was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant in the 200 block of West Second Street. When police went to her door, she reportedly threw herself on the ground and started “throwing a fit,” then tried to walk into her house. An officer grabbed her by the back of her shirt and pulled her to the ground, until she could be handcuffed.
