Heading into the San Juan Basin League track meet in Ignacio on May 1, the Dolores High School track teams were eager to see how they would measure up against quality competition.
It’s fair to say that both teams measured up well as the girls’ team finished third overall in the 11-team meet with 116 points, and the boys’ team placed fourth overall with 85 points.
Del Norte won the girls’ portion of the meet with 116 points, and Mancos won the boys’ portion of the meet with 182 points.
On the girls’ side, Dolores was led by Jordan Elder, who placed first in the long jump (16 feet, 8 inches) and second in the 200-meter dash (27.84).
Sydney Smith also enjoyed a solid day as the freshman placed first in the high jump (4 feet, 7 inches) and second in the 100-meter dash (13.84).
Sierra Schwartz also won an event for Dolores when she crossed the line first in the 100-meter hurdles (17.40).
The senior also finished third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.28.
Other top finishers included Akira Edwards, who placed second in the high jump (4 feet, 2 inches), and Brenn Jeter, who placed second in the triple jump (27 feet, 2¼ inches).
Anaya Martinez rounded out Top 3 performers with a second in the 3200-meter run (17:25.00).
On the boys’ side, Dolores was led by Aiden Adams, who placed first in the 100-meter dash (11.87) and second in the 200-meter dash (26.45).
Phillip Huffman also earned an event victory for the Bears when he crossed the line first in the 3200-meter run (10:59.21).
The Bears were led in the hurdling events by Camden Malloy, who placed second in the 300-meter hurdles (48.88) and third in the 110-meter hurdles (19.70).
Bryan Escarcega represented his team’s throwers well when he placed third in the discus (94 feet, 11 inches), and Chance Wilber led Dolores jumpers with a third-place finish in the long jump (16 feet, 6¼ inches).
Next up for both Dolores teams will be the Terry Alley Invitational in Pagosa Springs on May 5.
