La Plata County man is pardoned by Gov. John Hickenlooper

James Benavidez, 73, says he waited more than 50 years for justice
James Benavidez holds an executive order from Gov. John Hickenloper pardoning him for a crime he says he didn’t commit. According to court records, the Ignacio man pleaded guilty to felony burglary in 1963 in connection with a break-in at Wagon Wheel Liquors in Durango.
Ignacio resident James Benavidez said he began asking Gov. John Hickenlooper for a pardon around 2012 after being denied the purchase of a gun because of his felony conviction from the 1960s.
