A man who had fallen at the north end of Animas City Mountain was taken by helicopter to Mercy Regional Medical Center around 4 p.m. Sunday.
Butch Knowlton, director of La Plata County Search and Rescue, said the call about an injured hiker or rock climber came in around midday, and it took some time before ground crews could reach the injured man.
Knowlton said crews from Flight for Life were able to get closer to the injured man first, and they were later joined by ground crews who hiked to the scene.
Knowlton said the man fell between 20 to 25 feet. He had to be extracted and raised to a cliff above him.
Knowlton did not know the man’s name or details about the man. He also did not have details about the injury the man suffered.
“It was severe enough that he had to be raised out and removed. He was not mobile,” Knowlton said.
