The Washington Post has given Durango the honorary distinction of being a “Hallmark movie town” and says the chances for love in this supposedly fairly-tale Southwest Colorado town are at every street corner.
And no, the newspaper wasn’t talking about Snowdown.
A report Friday in the Post longs for the tinseled warmth found in the Hallmark Channel’s “Countdown to Christmas,” which features seasonal movies that over-dramatize yuletide joy.
“The movies tend to transport busy corporate types from cities to deeply quaint towns where they find love or, at the very least, the spirit of Christmas,” the reporter wrote. “Watching these movies may trigger the desire to visit one of these towns.”
So, of course, the Post tracked down five U.S. towns that apparently twinkle with this criteria. And atop the list: Durango.
The report boasts of Durango’s lovely wintertime views, the “cozy locals bundled up in lounge chairs around fire pits enjoying the après-ski scene.”
“You nestle in with them, doing your best to blend in while also standing out to a potential ‘special someone,’” the reporter wrote, offering some insight into what goes on in the minds of the people around us.
If you didn’t find love at Purgatory Resort, or if instead, you chose a ride on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad’s Polar Express, don’t fret.
“Mosey over to food-and-drink court 11th Street Station or the bar El Moro for more opportunities to meet your soul mate,” the report said. “If that doesn’t pan out like you and Hallmark hoped, try Noel Night on Dec. 6. Everyone in town comes out for the evening, where shops offer food, wine, games and discounts.”
Other towns that made the list: Leavenworth, Washington; Jackson, Wyoming; Middleburg, Virginia; and North Pole, Alaska.
