Durango railroad ushers in new oil-burning era

D&SNG launches converted locomotive with drier climate in mind
Chris Brophy, an engineer and assistant roundhouse foreman with the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, does some last-minute oiling of the No. 493 locomotive, the railroad’s first engine to be converted to run on oil.
Operationally, there’s not much difference between an oil-burning and a coal-powered engine, other than not having to shovel coal.
