Down to earth and genuine, Montezuma-Cortez High School’s 170-pound junior Seager Oliver is as engaging as he is talented.
Known for his impressive physical strength, Oliver enters this year’s State Tournament as Colorado’s top-ranked 170-pound wrestler.
“It’s a lot of pressure being the number one seed, but I’m really excited for it,” said Oliver, who owns a 37-2 record this season.
Asked about what it will take to bring home a state championship, Oliver was frank.
“You just have to be mean,” said the standout junior. “There are a lot of upsets, so you just have to be tough about it.”
Oliver will open the state tournament on Feb. 20 against Woodland Park High School’s Josh Smith (29-9).
After scoring several upsets in route to the state finals last season however, Oliver realizes that anything can happen and thus, will take nothing for granted.
“At state finals, you just have to be mean,” said Oliver. “There are a lot of upsets, so you just have to be tough about it.”
