Douglas Huff, about 20, of Cortez, is reported in good condition following an accident at the Montezuma Plywood Company about 9:30 a.m. on Monday. Huff, a strapper operator, had his foot on a return of transfer chain when it started up unexpectedly. He received two broken bones in his foot and several lacerations and was taken to Southwest Memorial Hospital by ambulance where he underwent surgery. This is the first serious accident at the plywood plant since the first of the year.
With the two-day celebration of Frontier Days in Dolores only a week away, the pace of preparation for the event has been speeded up and plans are being finalized.
A summer recreation program for kids in Dolores started this week with pre-teens being scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and teenagers being scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. on the same days. The kids are to meet at the basketball court on the school grounds. The program includes basketball, softball, volleyball, football and ping pong.
Two young men from Rico took an easy first place in Sunday's Jaycee-sponsored Dolores River Raft Race which was viewed by hundreds of spectators lining the river banks from the starting place at Stoner to the finish at Dolores.
Marshal Charlie Aragon put down a disturbance in the Hollywood Bar Sunday night between several Indians, four from Towaoc and one who was an AIM man out of Salt Lake City, and several local persons. For a minute it was a touchy situation, he said, but he fight was quelled.
