Generally speaking, world famous horse trainers do not offer free clinics in the Cortez area.
On July 15, however, preeminent horse trainer Pat Parelli do just at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds.
Scheduled to take place from 6 to 9 p.m., the free clinic will feature Parelli conducting a one-on-one coaching session with local Brand Inspector Joel Stevenson.
In addition to helping Stevenson fix problems with his horse, Parelli will explain “natural horsemanship” techniques and answer questions from those in attendance.
“There are probably two or three really big horse trainers (in the country) and he’s one of them,” said local horseman Ricky Carver. “(Parelli) is really good. He’s as close to a horse whisperer as you get.”
According to Carver, between 200 and 300 people are expected to attend the clinic, which he expects to be a success.
A part-time resident of Pagosa Springs, Parelli rarely hosts local clinics, but is looking forward to the opportunity.
“My mission is to help the level of horsemanship worldwide,” said Parelli. “We hardly spend any time sharing our knowledge and program with people near home and I’m looking forward to it.”
In addition to hosting a weekly television show on RFD TV, Parelli given clinics around the world and worked in front of the Queen of England.
Asked what local horse owners might learn from attending his clinic, Parelli responded, “problem solving skills.”
“There’s a natural and systematic approach to any problem,” said the renowned trainer. “What we’re hear to do is to provide people a pathway to solving their problems and realizing their dreams.”
