The artwork of Buford Wayt will grace the walls of Grace’s Kitchen, and on Sunday, Feb. 8, starting at 1:30 p.m., there will be a showing of the paintings.
Lee Bartley, a local pianist who plays on the national musical stage, will be doing a solo piano concert as well, starting at 2 p.m. Then there will be a reception. A free-will offering will benefit Grace’s Kitchen.
The showing will be located at the Episcopal Church at the corner of North and Elm Streets.
The Rev. Leigh Waggoner St. Barnabas of the Valley Episcopal Church said the reception is designed as a celebration and a fundraiser for Grace’s Kitchen.
“We served 165 people last Thursday. We used to serve 65,” she said. “We are seeing lots of new people.”
The church offers up a free lunch at noon every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Dotty Wayt, 92, Buford Wayt’s widow, said she is excited to see her late husband’s work honored.
Wayt is known for the mural he painted at the Cortez Cultural Center.
Dotty said her husband enjoyed painting landscapes and working with watercolors.
Buford Wayt moved to Cortez in 1950 and started the M-CHS band and choral groups.
He was awarded the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Arts in 1997.
The art has been loaned to the church from private collections.
