The Montezuma-Cortez High School boys tennis team placed fifth at regionals in Grand Junction last Friday.
Stemboat Springs won the regional tournament with Aspen, Montrose and Durango taking second, third and fourth, respectively.
The Panthers No. 1 doubles team of Nick Haukeness and Freeland Wegner narrolwy missed advancing to the state tournament. The seniors won three of four matches to take third. M-CHS coach Dan Wood was impressed with the play of his No. 1 doubles team.
Freeland and Nick are great athletes, he said. They worked together well at the net, and were enjoyable to watch throughout the tournament.
Caleb Branson and Todd Underwood finsihed fourth at No. 2 doubles with a 2-1 record.
No. 2 singles player Logan Dean took fourth with a win over Montrose. It was the sophomores fifth win of the season.
The Panthers (3-6, 0-5 5A/4A Region 8) ended the year with a 30-27 record in individual matches against 4A, Region 8 foes.
