This is the 19th and we have a crystal clear, San Juan blue sky with the mountainsides exhibiting large patches of yellow and some orange colors. The beginning of what promises to be one of our more brilliant fall seasons.
What I described sounds like a perfect day for hunting. A little snow on the ground would make it perfect! The black powder season is over, but bow season is on-going. Our neighbors are bow hunters and have not harvested their game. The game animals are around, but getting a good, close shot is troublesome at times.
Last week, I mentioned that a young man had harvested a bear in our area. Come to find out, he is a friend of Kim and Todd Jones and had been staying over across the river in Myron Jones old cabin. Last Monday, before leaving for Denver with his bear meat iced down in the cooler, he decided to try, one more time to fill his elk license. Our Kim told him to try a certain area, he did and came out with a 6 by 6 bull. Upon learning of Brandons success, she promised herself not to give away her secret areas of hunting ever again! Most hunters have their favorite hunting areas.
So, Brandon took Kins elk home. End of story.
Our elementary school is hosting their annual Fun Run this coming Sunday, Sept. 23. It is a ways-n-means project to raise funds for their ski program and other school functions. The Town is a great supporter and we see moms with baby buggies, toddlers, school aged students and lots of adults running for the school! Registration is at the Rico Elementary School at 9:30 and the race begins at 10 a.m. There is a small fee and T-shirts for sale. See you there. (Which means, we would love to see our down below friends come up and join us. Get some exercise fun up here in Rico!)
Turns out, this is a busy weekend coming up. Besides the Fun Run at the Town Park, the Rico Womens Club is hosting their Annual Chili Cook-off right after the Fun Run and it will be at the cabana at the Park. Registration is 11:30 and tasting will begin shortly after noon. Bring your best red or green chili in a crock pot, get your number and enjoy tasting all the other entries. Beverages will be furnished. Bring a side dish, if possible, of condiments for the chili, a dessert or whatever, maybe corn bread would be nice. We always see a nice turnout for this one. A traveling trophy will be awarded for the green and the red. We know that there are some great chili cookers down valley like the Moores and some others come on up!
