Yard sale to benefit humane society starts Sept. 28
For Pets Sake Humane Society will have its biggest yard sale ever on Friday through Sunday, Sept. 28-30 at the Cortez Christian Church Family Life Center on the corner of Empire and Hwy. 145. It will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday. So have fun with your fall cleaning and donate those unwanted treasures to the humane society! Donations can be brought to the building on Thursday, Sept. 27 from 2-7, or call For Pets Sake at 565-7387 for other options or for pick-up of large items. We need a LOT of goodies to make money to help the dogs and cats in Montezuma and Dolores Counties. So look hard for donations, and then come and get new treasures at the sale! (Please no computers or accessories, tires, or tvs)
Mancos to host balloon festival

Buy a ride! Prices are $125 per person with an amazing view of the Mancos Valley.
Come to the balloon glow in Boyle Park on Friday night, Sept. 28. Meet the pilots from all over the nation (and Great Britain). Feel the heat from the burners and see the special shaped balloons that only make their appearance for this event.
Visit Boyle Park and watch the balloons inflate and launch Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. Stand in the park and watch the drama of the morning launch. Is the wind right? Who is taking off first?
If the winds stay quiet, be in Boyle Park for a $10 tethered ride. Jump in the basket and experience the sensation of going up and down in a hot air balloon that floats over the park.
Just cant make it to the balloon launches or really want a hot air balloon to land near your home? Here is how you can raise your odds of that happening. Place a white or any light colored sheet where the pilots are welcome to land. In the end only the winds know where the balloon will land. However, with a welcome sheet in the pasture or yard, you may end up with visitors from the sky.
Landowners can register for a balloon ride drawing. The drawing will take place on Saturday night Sept. 29 during the dinner being held at the hardware store. To enter, please visit the visitor center to complete a registration card. You may also register at the festival icket Boboth in Boyle Park during the flight days and on Friday evening during the balloon glow.
Photo show to feature the good, the bad and the ugly
The Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market Street, Cortez, will host another reception The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly photo show for Cortez Heart and Soul. This is a chance to see photos of what your neighbors think about our community. Friday, Sept. 28 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Quilters to learn fusible grid technique
The Dolores Mountain Quilters will meet Tuesday Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. at the Dolores Community Center, 400 Riverside Ave. Each month, we have a short meeting, a home made craft exchange and show and tell. We will complete the morning with a workshop taught by Gail Braun on a fusible grid technique. Kearns to discuss Desert Varnish
The Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society is pleased to present Tim Kearns to discuss Desert Varnish in the Four Corners on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 North Market Street, Cortez. Desert Varnish is a naturally occurring coating on exposed rock surfaces and is relatively common in the Four Corners Region. It is often associated with prehistoric rock art. Mr. Kearns will begin the presentation by addressing various aspects of desert varnish including its formation, chemical components, age, and relevance. He will then discuss the occurrence of desert varnish in the Four Corners Region and will summarize the investigation of two prehistoric tool stone procurement (quarry) sites near Montezuma Creek where many of the artifacts were coated with desert varnish. He will then address the ramifications of this assemblage to the prehistory of the region and describe a varnish dating technique that was applied to the artifacts. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of new directions in desert varnish research.
Tim Kearns is a professional archaeologist currently associated with Woods Canyon Archaeological Consultants. Over his 37 years working in the southwest, he has worked for various museums, universities and private consulting firms. He has planned and directed a variety of archaeological projects which have provided him with a wealth of experience with the peoples living in northwest New Mexico including the southern Chuska Valley area. Tim has authored articles for Southwest Lore on the Basketmaker II culture and coauthored a chapter on the Basketmaker III period in the book Foundations of Anasazi Culture. In addition, he has written or coauthored over 150 archaeological reports and has presented his research at over 40 professional meetings.

The League of Women Voters is presenting two forums to provide information on candidates and issues prior to the election. The first will feature candidates for County Commissioner and other local offices. It will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 1:30 pm in the Calvin Denton Room at Empire Electric. Lewis author to host book signing in Cortez
Lowell F. Volk, a resident of Pleasant View, CO, will be available to sign copies of his book, Trevor Lane and the Civil War on Oct. 6 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N Park St, Cortez
After Trevors father is killed in a mining accident and his mother dies a questionable death, Trevor is alone on the streets during the cusp of the Civil War. He gets into trouble with the local law where the Chief of Police takes pity on him and convinces the Judge to allow Trevor to join the Army instead of going to jail. The story of Trevor runs during the Civil War from 1861 to the first part of 1865 when he is mustered out of the Sixth Pennsylvania Calvary.
Trevor Lane and the Civil War shows some of the problems that a young, enlisted man encounters. Sam Smith takes him under his wing when he firsts gets into the Calvary and they become good friends. While Sam is at home recovering from a wound, Trevor is captured by the Confederates and sent to Belle Isle prison camp. He is one of the lucky ones who escapes but on his way back to his company he becomes deadly sick, and only lives because of the kindness of a widowed mother and her two children.
Blair to discuss wild and living food in Mancos
Mancos Public Library is excited to announce an evening with Katrina Blair, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. at 211 West First St., Mancos.
Katrina began studying wild plants in her teens when she camped out alone for a summer with the intention of eating primarily wild foods. She later wrote The Wild Edible and Medicinal Plants of the San Juan Mountains for her senior project at Colorado College. In 1997 she completed a MA at John F Kennedy University in Orinda, CA in Holistic Health Education.
In 1998, Katrina founded Turtle Lake Refuge in Durango, Colorado. The Refuge is a non-profit organization whose mission is to celebrate the connection between personal health and wild lands. Turtle Lake Refuge opens as a wild harvested, locally grown and living foods café every Tuesday and Friday. Katrina teaches sustainable living practice classes through John F. Kennedy in California, San Juan College in New Mexico, and Fort Lewis College in Durango. She is the author of Local Wild Life-Turtle Lake Refuges Recipes for Living Deep

For Pets Sake Humane Society to Host Fall Pet Vaccination Clinic
For Pets Sake Humane Society will host a Low-Cost Dog and Cat Vaccination Clinic from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the IFA Country Store, 10501 Highway 491 in Cortez.
Veterinarian Dr. Sue Grabbe with Four Corners MASH will offer dog and cat packages which include rabies, distemper, parvo (dogs), leukemia (cats), and more for $39.00 each, or $14.00 for rabies only. Packages without rabies are just $32.00. Exact change is appreciated, checks are okay, but No credit cards please. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers. A portion of each package purchased will be donated to For Pets Sake.

Evening with Mark Twain to benefit cancer coalition
An Evening With Mark Twain by Dennis Seibel is the program of the local Womens Cancer Coalitions 10th Annual Pink Ribbon Affair on Thursday, Oct. 18, 6 p.m. at the Dolores Community Center. Spouses, families, and friends are invited to attend this special evening that honors breast and all cancer survivors. In addition to Mark Twain, there will be an Americana style show, an all-American buffet, a silent auction of great values, and fun door prizes. All proceeds from the $15 ticket benefit Montezuma and Dolores County women with cancer screening.
