A death certificate for George Sands lists his cause of death as “homicide” from “multiple gunshot wounds to head, neck and chest.”
Because the shooting of George Sands occurred on Southern Ute Indian Tribe land, the case is being investigated by the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and FBI. Both agencies have declined to provide comment about the incident.

A grandson of Forrest Fenn has confirmed the identity of a medical school student from Michigan reported to have found a more than $1 million treasure chest that the retired art and antiquities dealer stashed in the wilds of Wyoming over a decade ago. Jonathan “Jack” Stuef, 32, found the treasure in June, Fenn grandson Shiloh Forrest Old posted Monday, Dec. 7, 2020, on a website dedicated to the treasure.
The Lower Dolores River depends on an above average winter snowpack for a boating release from McPhee Dam. As of Dec. 7, the Dolores and San Miguel Rivers were at 48% of average snowpack.
McPhee Reservoir dropped to nearly the inactive pool level after the irrigation season. The reservoir depends on an average winter snowpack in the Dolores River Basin to fill every year. So far, winter snowpack is tracking at 44% of normal.
